Beautiful Books: Holes by Louis Sachar

Holes, by Louis Sachar, made me cry. Yes, I am a grown man. And, no, I don't cry easily. But this beautiful novel made me shed more than a single tear, I can tell you. If you haven't read it, then I won't spoil it by saying the tears came from sadness or joy - but know that you should stop reading this, and go find Holes to read right away to find our for yourself!

It is an absolutely beautiful book, a coming-of-age novel that celebrates friendship, courage, kindness and life itself. Full of diverse and unique characters, it tells the story of a juvenile correction centre, where the young delinquents are forced to dig a hold every day in the the boiling desert sun. What they find there - and what they find out about themselves - is a thing of beauty.

Holes was also made into a film, hence the poster above, but I haven't seen it so can't vouch for its beauty!
